This month marks my 22nd year in the publishing world. Here are some lessons I've learned
along the way:
Anyone can start writing a book but few people can finish it.
Guarding the rights to my book may be more important than being paid by a traditional publisher--and giving them the rights for the next 70+ years. (That was a hard lesson for
me!)
English majors aren’t always the best writers.
High school English teachers, too.
Art majors aren’t always good book cover designers.
Copyeditors rarely make good writers.
Writers rarely make good copyeditors. (I’m one of those people!)
Aspiring writers who write in isolation rarely write good manuscripts.
The most important lesson:
Taking a book from good to GREAT requires a team of specialists.
No one can publish a great book solely on their own.
No. One.
